What's in season: a Karnataka vegetable calendar
A rough month-by-month guide to what's in season in Karnataka — and why eating with the seasons is fresher, fairer, and better tasting.
Eating with the seasons used to be the only way to eat. Then year-round supply chains made everything available all the time — at the cost of freshness, flavour, and the natural rhythm that made produce taste of something.
At Jaivik, our baskets follow Karnataka's seasons, because that's when produce is at its best: grown in its right climate, picked at its peak, and easier for the farmer to grow well. Here's a rough guide to what turns up through the year.
A guide, not a guarantee — nature doesn't keep a strict calendar, and availability shifts with rain and region. Any change to your basket is always told to you in advance.
Monsoon (June–September)
The rains bring a flush of greens — amaranth (dantu), basale, harive and other soppu — alongside gourds of every kind: ridge, bottle, snake, ash. Corn and beans do well. A season for hearty, cooked-down greens and simple palya.
Post-monsoon & early winter (October–December)
The best stretch for variety. Carrots, beans, cauliflower, knol khol, fresh peas, radish and beetroot come into their own, and tomatoes are plentiful and full of flavour. This is when a basket looks its most colourful.
Winter into spring (January–March)
Cool mornings suit greens and roots — more carrots and beetroot, the last of the winter beans, and the first citrus of the year in musambi and oranges.
Summer (April–May)
The heat brings its own rewards: cucumber, mangalore cucumber, ash gourd and pumpkin to cool the body, and a run of melons. Lighter, water-rich vegetables that suit the season.
Why seasonal is better
- Fresher and more nutritious — grown in its right conditions and picked at its peak.
- Better for the farmer, who grows what the land wants to grow rather than forcing crops out of season.
- Better tasting — a tomato in its season is a different vegetable from one grown against the calendar.
